CASE-ing the Catty Challenge

Last week Bronwyn Eastley launched a new Stampin’ Up! Challenge Site – CASE-ing the Catty – aka CTC Challenges.

What a fantastic idea! We all get so much inspiration from the gorgeous samples and ideas in the Stampin’ Up! Annual catalogue that doing so as part of a challenge is a natural progression! Each week the challenge will focus on a different part of the Stampin’ Up! catalogue. Challenge #1 starts with the Gift and Packaging Section (pages 6 – 23 in the AU/NZ catty).

I haven’t really done challenges but have decided to participate in the CTC Challenge regularly.

So here’s my take on the gift bag that is found on page 13.

creativeJax CTC Challenge #1I am loving the new gold ribbons – they are great alone, together, with silver – so many options.

I used the gold and silver 1/8″ ribbon over the gold satin ribbon to create a striped effect. Also added a smaller bow in each of the gold and silver above the large bow. The sentiment is embossed in silver on the gold fancy foil designer vellum which has a sliver foil sheet mat.

As I have a purpose for this bag, I stamped a Thank You sentiment – “a thousand thanks” from the Lots of Thanks stamp set. But this colour and paper combo would also make a greet gift bag for a wedding gift.

Here’s a closeup

I’ve enjoyed taking inspiration from the catalogue and look forward to next week’s challenge.

MDS Monday – Convention Swap – Perfect Pennants & my Cameo

It’s hard to think Convention was more than 6 weeks ago – it only seems like the other day I was in Melbourne!

I had a great time – catching up with so many demonstrator friends, seeing and trying out new products, getting some excellent business training and tips, dancing the night away to ABBA Mania and participating in Swaps.

I made 50 swaps to take and they were gone so quickly I could easily have swapped double that. I came home with 50 wonderful creations from other demonstrators. Thanks to all who took part.

The swap I made for the South Pacific Convention was a hybrid card using Perfect Pennants – both as a physical stamp and a digital file from MDS. I made sure I used items that were carrying through to the new catalogue as I wanted the swap to be useful as a sample even after the new catty got released.

creativeJax Perfect Pennants

2014 Convention Swap – creativeJax

The physical stamp is repeated down the left side of the card. I wanted to show how the matching digital file (an svg file) can be manipulated in a couple of ways.

One of the great features of digital images is that they can be resized to whatever size you want. To show this I made the ampersand and words larger than the physical image.

When you cut something out using an e-cutter you obviously get the shape that you cut out (the positive), but you are also left with the space that the shape came out of (the negative). I could have used the positive image of these ampersand and words, but I kind of love negative spaces and wanted to use that in my swap. I wanted to put the negative shape up on dimensionals and have some of the cool colour collections DSP behind it.

Wanting to do this did mean I had to do some editing of the svg file – a steep learning curve! Thank goodness for YouTube. There are lots of great videos when you simply search – MDS and Silhouette Cameo.

If I had cut the file out just as it was, my ampersand would have been in one whole piece and what was left would have been in 3 pieces (the big outside piece and the 2 loops of the ampersand).

To get around this and make my negative space just a single piece I edited the ampersand so it was in 3 pieces with little connections alongside the ampersand – you can see some of them in the close-up below.

2014 convention swap creativejax

Close up of 2014 convention swap creativeJax

This was just the effect I was after as it made the negative one single piece, which meant when I constructed the card I was only placing one piece of whisper white cardstock rather than 3 individual pieces. I only did this editing because I was going to use the negative.

I sure had lots of fun making the swap and loved the swapping. It’s great to see what everyone else comes up with.

It’s Time to Celebrate

2014_06_creativeJax_In_This_Together_Bottle_TagAs I’ve mentioned before, both our children are fantastic singers.

Beth, 21, is a soprano and Ross, 19, is a bass/baritone.

(I know I am biased – but they really are good!)

This time last year we were celebrating with Beth on the conclusion of a wonderfully successful season in Phantom of the Opera with the Wellington Musical Theatre.

This year Ross successfully auditioned for the Chapman Tripp NZ Opera Chorus and is in the NZ Opera production of La Traviata which opened in Wellington last night.

Great effort – we are very proud parents!

So … It’s time to Celebrate!

Well done!

Convention Scraps put to use

Hello Friday

At the South Pacific Convention in Melbourne during May we created some awesome Make’n’Takes with our new stamp sets and gorgeous new products.

2014_05_creativejax_Convention_Make_n_takesIn addition to these goodies, at Product Playground we got to try the fantastic photo-polymer Metro Type Alphabet and had a go with the about to be released  Blendabilities (Old Olive and Pumpkin Pie) and the I Like You hostess stamp set.

So as well as the all finished projects I had to bring home, I also had a few samples, punched shapes, left over stamped images and scraps of unused cardstock and DSP to add to the luggage. Not wanting to waste any of these precious bits and pieces, I decided to turn them into a few more cards to highlight their features.

First up I teamed the Blackberry Bliss “LOVE” up with some Amazing Birthday offcuts in Tangelo Tango and added a spare Lost Lagoon butterfly. I love the way the sentiment is the feature of the card. When I had my catalogue launch I used this word but with a different colour combo and composition. (Check back next week for catty launch pictures.) Dimensionals and Pearls made the card pop! The dotty scraps look like a heavy washi tape but are stamped images.

2014_06_creativeJax_Metro_Amazing_Birthday

Also left over from the Amazing Birthday card set and box was a little DSP from the Flowerpot series which I stamped with the Back to Basics photo-polymer alphabet. I teamed this with one of my coloured I Like You flowers and the star stamp from Kinda Eclectic set stamped in black. I think this is going to be one of my favourite new sets! A star punched from Gold Glimmer Paper gave my Amazing You card a little sparkle.

2014_06_creativeJax_Kinda_eclectic_ConferenceAnother hostess set – Hello There – was the first All-Attendee-Giveaway at convention – yay!!! It is another cool set that has sentiments and some floral stamps. For my Hello There card I used the circle stamp to create the background below. There’s another Tangelo Twist DSP scrap & a Lost Lagoon butterfly as embellishments as well as a few flowers I had punched out using one of the new Itty Bitty Accents Punch Pack.
2014_06_creativeJax_Hello_there

For the last card made from my Convention Scraps, I highlighted my second blendabilities sample by cutting the cardstock into a triangle shape and mounting it on a black triangle. Another sentiment from the Hello There stamp set goes so well with the coloured flower. The Tangelo Twist ribbon was from another of our Make’N’Takes and Ties everything together!

2014_06_creativeJax_Hello _There_So_Sweet

It was fun to see what I could create with the little bits and pieces I brought home from Convention. They gave me some cute samples featuring new products to share alongside my Convention goodies before the new catalogue was launched.

Until next time.Logo 72pt

More Going Going Gone

Hello Again!

Hope your week has started well. I’ve been having a bit of a tidy up in my craftroom – making some space for new goodies which have arrived! Can’t wait to get to play!

But first let’s keep focussed on the retiring products – time is running out. I had a plan of which cards I was going to share – but already more of the products have sold out! My advice is if there is anything on the list that you are keen on then get them from the online store – products are while supplies last. Check what is still available HERE

My first card today that shows a retiring product is this masculine birthday card – and yes it also features the ever-popular Sassy Salutation!

2014_01_creativeJax_Happy_Hour_Bday_Card

I have used the Clockworks stamp set on several cards for men over the last couple of years – I’ve loved how all the individual stamps can be positioned in various ways to give so many different images and background effects – really versatile. I’ll have to find a new fav masculine set in the new catty – I already have a couple on my radar!  I’m pleased the Argyle embossing folder and Early Expresso Bakers Twine are staying.

Next card up is this pretty flip card made with the Label card thinlits  – which make it into the catalogue this year – yay! These thinlits are great to make a card with a WOW factor in a quick and easy way. The DSP on the card is Soho Subway DSP which had a great variety of papers in the set making it a go to set for all sorts of cards. Now it’s going – along with all the current DSP. Did you notice that I’ve used a different birthday sentiment? This one is from Remembering your Birthday which has several birthday greetings – including a Belated one!

2013_11_14_BirthdayCard

While the little pearls ( Basic Pearls Jewel Accents ) will be in the new catalogue, all three components of the other embellishment will not be. The embellishment is made by layering a Large Pearl Basic Accents on top of mid-sized button from the Natural Designer Buttons which are placed on a folded piece of Summer Starfruit Stitched Satin Ribbon.

Remember all cardstock, ink pads, Stampin’ Write Markers, ink refills etc for the five 2012 – 2014 “In-Colors” are leaving us at the end of the month – Summer Starfruit, Primrose Petals, Midnight Muse, Gumball Green and Raspberry Ripple will retire.  I think Midnight Muse was favourite from the group and will miss it. I am pleased that I have My Digital Studio (MDS) – colours don’t ever retire in the digital design software – so I can always get my fill of any colours there! You can download a free 30 day trial of MDS if you’d like to give the programme a try out.

I’ve also used the Very Vintage jumbo wheel on the card and the envelope in Summer Starfruit Ink. I was a little stunned, and very saddened to see the entire wheel product line is retiring at the end of this catalogue! This is a product line I will really miss – I love wheels!

The last card I’m sharing today is a baby card. Most of the baby cards I’ve made over the last two or three years have used the gorgeous Baby Tees wheel – now sold out. I’ll be adding the Baby Tees digital download to my next order I think. But I digress – the card below uses another cute baby set that is retiring – Sweetest Gift.

2014_01_creativeJax_Baby_Sweetest_Gift_1I just loved the cute little mobile stamp that is on the envelope! It reminded me of the one we had when our two were babies.

I’ve been enjoying looking back at some cards from the past – hope you are enjoying them too. And remember if you see a set that is on the retiring list order it before it’s … going, gong, gone!  Check out all the products that are leaving HERE

Going Going Gone

This week I’m sharing a few of my cards that include some of my favourite products that are retiring at the end of the month when the current annual catalogue ends. Some of them are new and some are ones that I have made over the life of the catalogue. I’ll start today with cards that are older ones.

Note: If you wish to purchase any of the products mentioned, highlighted words will take you to the on-line shop. The products were still available at the time of writing, but availability is not guaranteed – get in quick if you wish to purchase!

The Mosaic Aperture card was one of the cards I did at my first class – way back in September. I really look forward to classes each month as I do enjoy sharing my love of crafting and Stampin’ Up! products with others.

2013_Sept_Class_Aperture_Mosaic_Madness copy

The Mosaic Madness stamp set and matching Mosaic punch along with the Four You stamp set will continue to be available in the new catalogue. This is a versatile little sentiment set (hello, Thinking of You, Birthday Wishes, Thank You).  However, as with all the DSPs (designer series papers) in the current catalogue, the Quatrefancy specialty DSP is retiring. The set includes a patterned window sheet which I used in the card to make the window, or aperture. While the Mosaic Madness stamps and Mosaic punch will be in the new catalogue, the current bundles of these will not be – so if you don’t have these and would like them both – think about getting a bundle (wood mount or clear mount) before the current catalogue finishes. You save 15% by purchasing a bundle when compared to purchasing the products individually.

The second card I’m sharing today is an engagement card that has three retiring products in it!

Engagement Card watermark

The Hearts A Flutter  Stamp Set, the En Francais background stamp and the Set Designer Frames Embossing Folders are all retiring. The En Francais stamp has sold out already and is no longer available. The repeated “Congratulations” sentiment is from Sassy Salutations which is staying – yay! As is the other embossing folder I used in the card – Beautifully Baroque.

I did enjoy making this butterfly card to display the brights colour family and I am pleased the butterflies (Papillon Potpourri) and sentiment (Chalk Talk) are in the new catalogue. There are also some new butterfly stamps in the 2014/2015 catalogue that co-ordinate with the Bitty Butterfly punch and the Elegant Butterfly punch.

2013_Butterfly_Brights.So what is retiring on the card you ask? It is the Daffodil Delight 1/4″ Stitched Grosgrain ribbon. I had this ribbon in a couple of the available colours – but Daffodil Delight was definitely my favourite! It is even at a discounted price on the retired list – stock up while you can.

The last card for today is a Clean and Simple (CAS) card made by Beth that uses another sentiment from Sassy Salutations – I’m not the only one in the house that likes that set and is pleased it’s staying!

While some colours of Bakers Twine is returning in the new catalogue Calypso Coral Bakers Twine isn’t.

2013_creativeJax_Pinwheels_Card

The pinwheels are from the set Sweets for the Sweet, which also includes lollipops and wrappers. The spiral shape you can just see on the inside of the card is one of the lollipop tops. While it is not always obviously in my photos, I always stamp inside my cards – they seem “naked” without something added for the recipient to see when they open the card. I also usually stamp the envelope with one of the stamps I have used. This is a preference that has rubbed off onto Beth’s cardmaking too!

Until next time,Logo 72pt

Patio Party Meets 21st – Thank You Cards

So this is the last post about they way we used the Patio Party  designer series paper (DSP) as the theme for Beth’s 21st celebrations

It has taken longer than I planned to share all the info – but hope you have enjoyed seeing what we’ve done.

No event is finished until the thank cards have been sent – so of course our last activity was to send out cards to our family and friends. We had taken photos of Beth with each of her guests and we wanted to incorporate these photos to personalise everyone’s card.

Below is a finished card with a family photo in it. We had taken a family photo to use in the cards of those unable to join us at her party.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou

You can see we continued the Patio Party DSP on Baja Breeze and we utilised the Labels shape as a window frame for the photo. The piece that had been cut out was used as an embellishment on the envelope.

Below is a photo tutorial of how we made the card. It is a technique that could be used to send any photo.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou6

Cut an A4 piece of baja breeze cardstock to 14.9cm wide and score at 10.5cm and 21cm.

Cut the DSP to 9.9cm x 14.6cm and tape as shown in the above picture. It is taped this way so that when the label shape is cut out, the cardstock and the DSP pieces won’t stick together.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou7

Adhere the DSP to the middle section of the baja breeze cardstock.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou4

Using the Labels Collection Framelits, run the joined cardstcok and DSP through the Big Shot using the magnetic cutting plate to cut out a window. Using the magnetic plate makes positioning the framelits easier and much more secure than using the standard multi-purpose platform.

As well as the cardstock that will form the photo frame card, there will be a piece of shaped DSP that can be used as an embellishment and a piece of shaped cardstock that can be used inside the card if desired.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou5

Place narrow tape along the outside edges of the narrowest segment of the baja breeze cardstock. When folded up and stuck down, this will form the pocket to place the photo into.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou3

The above photo shows the outside of the card after the photo pocket has been made.

creativeJax_PatioPartyMeets21st_ThankYou1

The inside of the card with photo in its pocket is shown above.

Patio Party Meets 21st – Going Digital

I’m really excited to share a little info on how we incorporated some digital items into the 21st celebrations.

My Digital Studio (MDS) is Stampin’ Up!’s digital Design software – and I love it. There are so many things you can use it for. It’s an amazing program in its own right and then it uses Stampin’ Up!’s colours and stamps and embellishments and DSPs and punch shapes – and the digital files don’t retire in the same way that the physical products do! WOW!

my_digital_studio

Check out more about MDS on my website here or at the My Digital Studio website here.

There are several digital downloads in the Patio Party suite of products – the Make a Cake stamp set, DSP and an ensemble that has many embellishments, stamps and punches. We used these digital downloads both within MDS itself and as files within other programs and printing some of the images themselves. This flexibility is an extremely positive feature of MDS and of the digital downloads themselves. You can use many of the files without even having MDS – but at $27.95 it is an amazing purchase.

If you would like to try the programme – you can download MDS for a 30-day trial at no cost – or obligation. Click on the image below.

MDS free download

The first use of digital products for the 21st was when we were making the invitations. The inside of the invitations and the RSVP card were made in MDS. Not only could we use several of the cute images from the suite, MDS allows the use of any fonts installed on your own computer, so we cold use what we wanted and colour it to be Midnight Muse – Yay!

creativeJax - Patio Party meets 21st - invitaion 2 copy

 creativeJax_patioParty_meets_21st_rsvp

One of the tasks I took on without Beth’s knowledge was to put together a photo-book of her life.

creativeJax - Patio Party meets 21st - book cover copy

The cover of the book was designed to look like one of the party invitations.

I wanted to design the inside layout so that there was plenty of space for party guests to write in on the evening of her 21st party.

I found a photo-book template that I thought would suit – Today and Everyday

Today & Everyday Photobook

I changed the colours and replaced the stamps, punches and embellishments to those of the Patio Party Suite. Again – really flexible and fully customisable

Below are a sample of pages from within the book.

creativeJax - Patio Party Meets 21st - Book2

creativeJax - Patio Party Meets 21st - Book4

creativeJax - Patio Party Meets 21st - Book1

This photo-book is a wonderful keepsake for Beth and she was truly delighted with it when it arrived. Having people write personal messages to her makes it priceless.

Having put a lot of work into the photo-book, and knowing that only one or two people would be able to look at it at any one time, I decided to turn the pages into posters as well. I could export each page as a picture file from MDS, that I then put together as posters – our 80 page book and a few pictures from Beth’s actual birthday became 6 large posters that we hung on the walls for her party.

Some of the posters are shown below.

creativeJax_patioParty_meets_21st_posters2

creativeJax_patioParty_meets_21st_posters

People enjoyed looking at the posters and they were great conversation starters.

I mentioned in the post about Beth’s cake (Patio Party Meets 21st – The Cake) that we incorporated some digital media on the cake itself.

Becs of Stiletto Studio printed the digital picture files of the DSP onto the icing in edible ink to make the pinwheels and the bunting on the cake. They looked awesome and were real show stoppers on the night – guests were fascinated with the use of images on the cake.

creativeJax_patioParty_meets_21st_dessert

This was another example of Beth imagination giving her a really clear idea of what she would like and how we could use the digital files to accomplish this.

As always – if you wish to know anything more about, or to buy any of the items mentioned in the post, please contact me.

Or you can shop 24/7 at my online Stampin’ Up! shop – just click on any of the product shown in the table below, and you should find yourself at the page with information about the product.

My next post will be last post in this series and will be looking at the thank you cards we have put together and will include a photo tutorial of making a card to display a photo.
